Oregon Drivers: Here Are the Rules Around Tinting Your Vehicle
Let's debunk this myth right away: window tinting is not illegal for any size automobile. In the state of Oregon, there are specific rules and regulations in place to ensure the safety of drivers and that their vehicles abide by legal operation limits. At Garvin Auto Spa, we offer window tinting options that comply with these regulations.
To understand these regulations better, there are two specific categories that are considered by law enforcement. This includes tint darkness, which is measured in Visible Light Transmission (VLT) percentages, and reflectiveness, which is a much more simple category to follow.
Starting small, all size vehicles driven in the state of Oregon are allowed to have a non-reflective windshield strip applied to the top 6 inches of their windshield. The front driver and passenger side of all size vehicles must allow for up to 35% VLT for their tinting to be legally admissible without a doctor's prescription. The rear driver and passenger side windows along with the rear windshield are a different story for different size vehicles. Smaller vehicles must have tinting that allows for up to 35% VLT on these surfaces, while larger vehicles can have tinting as dark as a driver desires for all rear windows.
The most limiting rules of window tinting have to do with tint reflectiveness more so than darkness. In Oregon, window tinting must not be more than 13% reflective in comparison to factory tinting.
